I’m excited to announce the release of The Valley of Giants, a panoramic photograph that captures the awe-inspiring beauty of Monument Valley. This new work celebrates the iconic landscape of Arizona while showcasing the effort, patience, and craftsmanship involved in film photography. Let me take you behind the scenes and share the story of capturing this breathtaking shot.

Monument Valley, with its towering mesas and buttes, stands as one of the most recognizable landscapes in the world. The place exudes a sense of majesty and mystery, drawing visitors from all over the globe. As a photographer, I knew I had to approach this landscape with respect, using the right tools and mindset. That’s why I chose my old film panorama camera, which required careful planning and precision.

Choosing Film in a Timeless Landscape

Unlike digital photography, film photography demands a more deliberate approach. The camera’s large format and mechanical design force me to slow down and focus on every detail. Moreover, in Monument Valley, the light shifts rapidly, and the landscape transforms before your eyes. Because of this, I faced the challenge of capturing that perfect moment—when the sky’s colors, shadows, and textures of the mesas all aligned.

Waiting for the Moment to Align

When I arrived in Monument Valley, the land’s vastness and stillness immediately captivated me. The sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the desert. Moments like this are what make film photography so rewarding—capturing something rare and fleeting. I knew I had only one shot to get it right, which added excitement to the process.

I quickly set up my camera, carefully framing the shot. The mesas of Monument Valley loomed large in the distance, and I was determined to capture their grandeur. As the sun dipped lower, the sky shifted into vibrant hues of orange, red, and purple. I knew that soon, the light would fade, and with it, my chance to capture this fleeting moment.

At that point, every aspect of film photography mattered. The exposure, framing, and timing all had to align perfectly. With focused determination, I steadied the camera and pressed the shutter just as the last rays of sunlight slipped beyond the horizon.

The result is The Valley of Giants, a photograph that showcases the rugged beauty and timeless nature of Monument Valley. The warm sunset tones contrast with the darkening shadows of the mesas, creating a powerful composition. Through film photography, I didn’t just capture the scene—I captured the awe-inspiring feeling of standing in such an ancient and storied place.

The Valley of Giants honours Monument Valley and the art of film photography. It reminds us of how some landscapes, though timeless, change with every passing moment. This photograph invites viewers to pause, reflect, and appreciate the enduring beauty of this majestic desert landscape.
