THREE FAN TAN ALLEY Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narro THREE FAN TAN ALLEY

Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street, is nestled in the heart of #Victoria in Canada's oldest Chinatown. Established in 1858, this area offers visitors history that's as rich as its modern
cuisine. Welcoming immigrants during the gold rush, Fan Tan Alley was thriving during a unique period of time; home to gambling dens along with the then-legal opium dens, the commerce and trade created an electric block in early Victoria.

Now, an incredibly trendy spot, the alley is home to more than a dozen locally-owned shops. Visitors and locals enjoy organic treats, vintage records, a yoga studio, an 'Umbrellatorium', locally made jewelry and more. In a city bustling with tourists,
it's rare to not just experience but capture the alley so still.

Capturing a people-free scene took numerous attempts. Returning time and time again, I was thrilled to shoot this scene in the silence of dusk. This image seamlessly blends history (marked by age-old brick) and modern shop signs.
Although empty on this night, there's still subtle, simmering energy here. I love the shadows, the depth, and the overhead lanterns that signal warmth, happiness, and good fortune.

Nearly 15 years ago I first laid eyes on the alluring Hatley Castle; since that day, I have been envisioning different shots and angles of it. I just knew there was an incredible photograph to be found! As a result I’ve spent a lot of time at this location getting to know it intimately. The colourful lush vegetation and bountiful gardens found throughout the property create a stark contrast to the grey stone and Edwardian architecture of The Hatley Castle.

The castle was built between 1908 and 1909 for James Dunsmuir, son of Robert Dunsmuir and former premier, lieutenant-governor - at the time the wealthiest man in BC. Since then the castle has had a rich and varied history including being a military college for many years, a film set for countless movies including the X-Men franchise and presently it’s a university campus. However, things could have been very different, at one point The Hatley Castle was the contingency plan for King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth to reside in Canada in the event of an invasion of Britain during World War II.

My intention was to frame the castle by using the foliage in the foreground. I knew I needed a perfect fall day when the colours were full blast showcasing the vibrant red, orange and yellow leaves against the backdrop of this masterpiece in design; this would pull the viewer’s eye into the image. After countless seasons and multiple days and nights at this location, I had finally captured the shot I had been chasing all these years.

I spent countless hours walking up and down this shoreline on the hunt for the right angle and perfect light for this shot. I know how breathtaking the sunset can be from this vantage point but it wasn’t until the sky was on fire that I was able to truly find this spot. Knowing the beauty I was witnessing in real time, I rushed to translate the landscape’s stunning attributes into a photograph… while finding a way to truly do it justice! With most photographers, there is an inexplicable feeling when you just know you’ve found the shot. The time it takes to capture certain scenes can lead to the hours and days of developing and editing.

This scene was no different. As soon as the sky lit up I immediately knew this was going to be a sunset to remember. The West Coast of Canada is known for crazy rain storms, and if you can time it properly, the day the clouds break up is usually a guarantee for great sunsets/sunrises. One of the things I love about this image is the contrast between the temperate rainforest meeting the shoreline that wanders off into the distance, where bald eagles circle overhead & the sky erupts with it’s fiery textures, and the bustling metropolis of Vancouver that’s always propped over your shoulder out of sight and out of mind. My focus was only on the moment unfolding in front of me, happening right now, the end to another day and I am fortunate to witness another incredible West Coast sunset.

In most cases, I know I have the shot when I’ve taken it. “Summer Dreams” was not yet released… and one of my gallery visitors had looked through the majority of my collection and was now scrolling through my unreleased images. It only took a few seconds for her to excitedly announce “THAT’S IT”; these experiences I have with collector’s give me motivation while continuously drawing me back into the work! “Summer Dreams” was a ‘love at first sight’ experience for not only me but also one of my newest collector’s…

The winter rain season is around the corner, and with it will come some pretty ‘Stormy Nights’. I love this time of the year, because the waterfalls and river beds start filling up! This is when the rainforest comes alive, and after a summer filled with heatwaves, to say we need it would be an understatement!

The colours each season brings provide remarkable photographic opportunities. I’ve had my eye on some iconic Autumn shots throughout southern Vancouver Island; there were numerous locations I had attempted particular shots but couldn’t find the correct light, symmetry and overall ambiance I had in mind. I have many goals when it comes to what I want the viewer to experience when looking at my work - one goal I’m consistently passionate about, is to have them completely immersed in the image and feel as if they can walk right into it.

I had scouted this location years before and knew that it came with a number of obstacles, one being the fact I had to trek 2 kilometres up the river to get to this location! It was a cold morning, in the heart of Vancouver Island - an area I knew a shot was waiting for me. I was fortunate enough to have the correct equipment and perfect vantage point to capture this shot. The contrast of the bright orange, red, and yellow leaves with the earthy tones of the water’s reflection and surrounding flora creates a unique ambiance - this paired with a longer exposure was exactly I had envisioned.

It was on a Saskatchewan photo mission to a totally different location that I passed this spot. I saw it out of the corner of my eye and immediately knew that it was picture perfect. I quickly made the decision to stay and shoot the sunset here!
