About This Piece

I spent six nights in Gastown, Vancouver, seeking perfect light. I scoured the area for a photographic perspective, exploring streets, overpasses, and roofs. Thankfully, I gained roof access to capture the stunning scene, waiting for the right sunset, cloud shift, and light.

In historic Gastown, the Woodward’s Building dominates, clouds seemingly hugging the tower. Designated a National Historic Site in 2009, Gastown blends old and new. The red brick architecture reflects history, while glass-encased buildings symbolize future investments.

Gastown, originally “township of Granville,” earned its name from “Gassy Jack,” the talkative saloon owner. Once a bustling hub, it fell into decay after the Great Depression. In the 1960s, preservation efforts sparked gentrification, making Gastown central to Vancouver’s cosmopolitan charm.

Named the world’s fourth most stylish neighborhood in 2012, Gastown’s eclectic energy and historic backdrop attract entrepreneurs. Exploring the image, cobblestone streets and the bustling atmosphere transport you to Gastown’s lively past.
