About This Piece
Captured quite literally in the middle of nowhere on the Pacific Ocean, this photograph depicts a Canadian warship. The ship, having sailed around the world, is built like armour and meant to withstand the most severe weather conditions and toughest opponents the world can offer. Appearing timeless and strong, vessels like these ones mirror the courage of every sailor who works inside of them.
In 2017, I had the unbelievable honour of sailing back to Victoria from Pearl Harbour on board this ship. Forever etched in my memory, this trip offered me an up-close-and-personal account of life on a warship – an incredibly challenging task no doubt.
While on board, I wanted to find a vantage point of the ship that showed how aggressive it is. After days of looking around, I felt that the perfect spot was looking straight down the barrel of the 70 Calibre gun mounted on the focsle. Capable of firing a mind blowing 220 rounds per minute at a range of 17 kilometres it’s sure to destroy any enemy that finds themselves on the wrong side of our forces.
˜The Warrior” represents my gratitude and pays homage to the brave men and women who work aboard. Dedicating their lives and sacrificing their freedoms to protect ours and keep us safe at home. These sailors demonstrate mental and physical tenacity through each and every mission.
