Stormy Nights

Shot from Vancouver’s North Shore, “Stormy Nights” shows the dark mood typical of the Vancouver Skyline during storm season. This time of year brings rainy days, heavy fog, and grey skies. Known as Canada’s ‘wet coast,’ this coastal rainforest is one of the wettest non-tropical areas in the world.

As I prepped my gear, I anxiously awaited one of our frequent February rainstorms. I watched the clouds shift and change, and soon they unleashed a downpour on the Vancouver Skyline below. Surprisingly, the large, dark clouds quickly overshadowed the tall skyscrapers. In the center of the photograph, Vancouver’s iconic Canada Place convention center shines brightly, its sails reaching high into the sky.

On this stormy day, the usual water traffic in Vancouver was nowhere to be seen. Floatplanes, cargo ships, and recreational vessels typically fill these waterways, but today was different. This calm allowed for a clear shot of the Vancouver Skyline. The contrast between the storm clouds and the tall buildings is striking and dramatic. The different shades of blue from the stormy dusk create a magical scene.

“Stormy Nights” serves as a reminder of nature’s power and beauty. While some people struggle to see the charm in Vancouver rain, I find joy in the storm’s force. The downpour is necessary to nurture the lush rainforest surrounding the city, making these “Stormy Nights” all the more special.
