The images from Cox Bay Lookout had always stayed with me. The stunning views of Tofino’s coastline, with its expansive beach and distant mountains, sparked a deep desire to capture it. I envisioned a panoramic shot that would show the sweeping beauty of the bay, a scene that no one had captured quite like I wanted.
Upon arriving at the base of the mountain, I couldn’t find a clear trail to the summit. With the sun setting, I chose the most direct route to the Cox Bay Lookout before it was too late. I bypassed any marked paths, climbing straight up, trusting that it would be the best way to reach the perfect vantage point.
As I ascended, the view unfolded with every step. The landscape became more breathtaking, and I could feel the photograph coming to life. By the time I reached the summit, I had just enough time to set up my gear. The sunset bathed the sky in shades of orange, pink, and purple, casting a warm glow over the entire bay.
I framed the shot carefully, capturing the curve of the beach and the distant mountains. The gentle tide added a calming touch to the scene, which was exactly what I had hoped to photograph. The light shifted, and I knew I had captured the perfect image—one that conveyed both the vastness and peace of Tofino.
As the last light of day faded, I packed my gear and began the descent. The route back was much harder without a clear path. I stumbled over branches, and the growing darkness slowed me down. Doubts crept in, but the thought of the image I had just captured kept me moving forward.
Finally, after what felt like hours, I made it back to the base. My clothes were torn, but my heart swelled with satisfaction. The photograph of Cox Bay at sunset was everything I had imagined. Though the climb had been challenging, the result was worth every step. The memory of that journey would always remind me of the beauty and peace of Tofino.
