M O R N I N G S P I R I T

On a frigid December morning while on the hunt for a location that represented the hardworking men and women of the maritimes, I came across this little fishing village nestled into Nova Scotia’s southern shore. I couldn’t have imagined a better scene to match what I had in my mind. Shortly after I shot this image, the boat to the right loaded up and the headed out to sea to battle the waves and collect food for the locals.

With a hearty wave from a fisherwoman, this scene was over as fast as it happened.

THE VALLEY OF GIANTS

When approaching certain geographical treasures like Monument Valley, it’s hard not to imagine what the first people would have felt when slowly walking towards the horizon; what were their thoughts when edging closer to the vast space of the Grand Canyon? What wonders were pondered when approaching the iconic rock formations of Monument Valley? To this day, these unique landscapes throughout the southern United States have drawn visitors from all over the globe, leaving all visitors in awe.

On an 8 day trip through the southwestern united states it was a brief but unforgettable stop in Monument Valley that provided me the opportunity to capture this image. Immediately upon arrival, I had numerous ideas running through my head; I was envisioning a number of different angles and perspectives that could be attempted. I wanted to be confident the light and angle was correct before leaving, knowing my time was limited and I may not have a chance to get back here for years! The clock was winding down, I quickly set up my equipment all while keeping an eye on the upcoming sunset. Just as I pulled the shutter for the shot, "The Valley of Giants" slowly slipped away into complete darkness.

I N T O T H E L I G H T

The northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba skies offer incredible opportunities for photography. There's an interesting paradox in this unique area of Canada - the crisp, unforgiving cold weather paired with the colourful and seemingly warm skies is something I’ve always found appealing. This particular shot was taken in the same area as one of my most popular images "The First Flight". The colourful sky blanketing the stillness and tranquil bodies of water has the ability to create a striking, yet calming dynamic. I generally go back to certain locations multiple times to capture the right shot; this particular evening, "Into the Light" was perfectly staged and ready for me to capture.

W I N T E R W O N D E R L A N D 'Winter Wonderl

W I N T E R W O N D E R L A N D

'Winter Wonderland' resonates with many of my Gallery visitors and collectors alike for a number of reasons; whether it's the aesthetic principles of the image, the soft white texture of the snow contrasting with the purple sky, or the overall feeling the photograph embodies. When I look at 'Winter Wonderland' an entirely different emotion and memory inundates me. The struggle, exhaustion, and stress of capturing an image which invokes the opposite is something I find rewarding.

The thought of quitting continued to repeat in my head, but I knew I had come too far while the image I was envisioning pushed me forwards. With my 65 lb backpack and the snowshoes seemingly getting heavier, I was glad I listened to a motivational audiobook prior. Good things come to those who wait AND also work hard! I knew nobody was coming, nobody was there to motivate me; at that point I knew it was completely up to me to reach the mountain top.

P I N K R A I N

Persistence is the key ingredient to any killer image. I stood through a tornado storm cell the night before and looked like my camera and I had taken a shower together. The following night, after drying everything out I got back out there. Just as the sun was dropping below the horizon, the clouds broke and this rain cloud passed overhead. In that moment I knew that I was getting the shot I had patiently waited for.

The summer nights in Vancouver, BC are unparalleled! The colours explode from within the city. I spent 6 nights in a row shooting this image looking for the exact scene I had in my mind. On that final night the clouds slowly rolled in and hugged around the Woodward’s building featured in the centre of the image. Just as they did that, the light started to explode! I was ready, and waiting… It was just down to the camera to capture this amazing scene as it unfolded in front of me.
