A Field of Dreams - Vancouver Island, BC Finding A Field of Dreams - Vancouver Island, BC

Finding a location that lends so much beauty sometimes creates an easy photographic process; the landscape does half the work for you! I was fortunate that a really good friend of mine pointed me towards this unbelievable field of daffodils. This particular place, however stunning and seemingly simplistic, didn’t just meet me 'half-way'. The flowers seemed to go on forever, and I was instantly mesmerized by this location.

I was hoping to slow the shutter speed down and capture the light over a longer period of time as it transitioned into night. The only problem I had on my hands was that it was windy. I was focused on trying to find patches where the wind would die down enough so that the entire field of daffodils wasn’t blurry. Every time I would go to fire the shutter, the wind would pick up and the movement of the flowers was just too much. One hour turned into multiple hours of waiting. As the nightfall drew closer and just as I advanced the film to the last shot on the roll, just as I did that the wind died down to manageable and I was able to fire off one last, what felt like a lifetime, 600 second shot to close the night off.

The silver lining in all of this was that if everything went smoothly and I used one of my first photographs, the final shot wouldn't have been this brilliant. It’s this perfect combination of persistence and frustration that keeps me coming back every time!

What does one do for Black (and white) Friday??? O What does one do for Black (and white) Friday??? Obviously release a new image!!

L I M I T L E S S

It was on a crisp, damp, foggy morning that I found myself on this pier chasing a shot that I had imagined in my head. These conditions are my absolute favourite to shoot in as the fog lends itself to intimate scenes. I generally use it to eliminate visual elements that I don’t feel suit a scene, however, in this case it not only eliminated those unwanted things, but made this walkway feel like it goes on forever.

As I stood here mesmerized by the way this location had been transformed, I couldn’t help but think about life. It made me question what lies ahead, how you never know what the future holds. Many people give up just when they're about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line because they don’t realize it’s just around the next corner. Too often we focus on the fear of the unknown when we should find comfort in the uncertainty of what may lie ahead, knowing that everything we’ve done until this point has prepared us for where we are and whats to come.

Once you surrender to this fact, and stop making decisions out of fear, your opportunities become limitless.

The epic scale and beauty of the Grand Canyon immediately captivated me during my first visit; I knew this was a location I was going to have to visit on more than one occasion in order to capture its true beauty. It was on an epic 2017 photographic trip from Death Valley to Colorado that I decided to re-visit this remote iconic location again and try to capture a scene that I had found years prior. This lookout had a brilliant composition, almost as if it was a window into the canyon. However, having only previously seen it during the day, I was excited to witness what the sunset would bring! I quickly understood how the contrast and light dramatically changes in this seemingly alien environment, so I needed to be ready with my finger on the shutter when the light was just right. We arrived just before sunset, so I was in a race against time to get everything set up. Once everything was good to go, all I could do was stand there and take in the scene.

The thing that attracted me to this composition was the way that the rocks in the foreground framed the scene, almost as if you’re looking through a window into the canyon. I will be forever blown away by each individual layer in the canyon, and how colourful the red rock is. This area of the world is truly an artists dream.

THREE FAN TAN ALLEY Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narro THREE FAN TAN ALLEY

Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street, is nestled in the heart of #Victoria in Canada's oldest Chinatown. Established in 1858, this area offers visitors history that's as rich as its modern
cuisine. Welcoming immigrants during the gold rush, Fan Tan Alley was thriving during a unique period of time; home to gambling dens along with the then-legal opium dens, the commerce and trade created an electric block in early Victoria.

Now, an incredibly trendy spot, the alley is home to more than a dozen locally-owned shops. Visitors and locals enjoy organic treats, vintage records, a yoga studio, an 'Umbrellatorium', locally made jewelry and more. In a city bustling with tourists,
it's rare to not just experience but capture the alley so still.

Capturing a people-free scene took numerous attempts. Returning time and time again, I was thrilled to shoot this scene in the silence of dusk. This image seamlessly blends history (marked by age-old brick) and modern shop signs.
Although empty on this night, there's still subtle, simmering energy here. I love the shadows, the depth, and the overhead lanterns that signal warmth, happiness, and good fortune.

Nearly 15 years ago I first laid eyes on the alluring Hatley Castle; since that day, I have been envisioning different shots and angles of it. I just knew there was an incredible photograph to be found! As a result I’ve spent a lot of time at this location getting to know it intimately. The colourful lush vegetation and bountiful gardens found throughout the property create a stark contrast to the grey stone and Edwardian architecture of The Hatley Castle.

The castle was built between 1908 and 1909 for James Dunsmuir, son of Robert Dunsmuir and former premier, lieutenant-governor - at the time the wealthiest man in BC. Since then the castle has had a rich and varied history including being a military college for many years, a film set for countless movies including the X-Men franchise and presently it’s a university campus. However, things could have been very different, at one point The Hatley Castle was the contingency plan for King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth to reside in Canada in the event of an invasion of Britain during World War II.

My intention was to frame the castle by using the foliage in the foreground. I knew I needed a perfect fall day when the colours were full blast showcasing the vibrant red, orange and yellow leaves against the backdrop of this masterpiece in design; this would pull the viewer’s eye into the image. After countless seasons and multiple days and nights at this location, I had finally captured the shot I had been chasing all these years.
